Bill Clinton has spoken in it. Marlene Dietrich has performed in it, and Marilyn Monroe loved it. Now it is coming to Limerick…

spiegeltent2The people behind Culture & Chips have confirmed that Limerick will receive delivery of the Salon Perdu Spiegeltent in preparation for this June Bank Holiday carnival, a legacy project for Limerick City of Culture.

Salon Perdu is a European Mirror Tent (Spiegeltent) – the ultimate cabaret and music salon. Since the early 20th century, these hand-made pavilions have been used as travelling dance halls, bars and entertainment salons. There are only a handful of these unique and legendary ‘tents of mirrors’ left in the world today.

perduNigel Dugdale, Culture & Chips organising team said: “We are extremely excited about the arrival of the Salon Perdu which is a superb Art Nouveau style Spiegeltent with a capacity to hold up to 400 people standing. We have confirmed acts like Jack L and the Jerry Fish Electric Sideshow as well as a locally produced Cabaret and a magnificent Culinary Banquet. All of these events will take place in a setting never before seen in Limerick.”

The Salon Perdu is decorated with an opulent rich burgundy velvet draped ceiling, mirrored dance floor pillars, stained glass windows, private seating booths and sumptuous period lighting. A circular wooden dancefloor, internal bar and elaborate entranceway are beautifully enhanced with rich fabric drapes.

“The Spiegeltents have travelled across the globe and are lovingly restored and adapted from the 1920’s to suit modern health and safety requirements. Limerick is set to welcome a fantastic new venue right in the heart of the city which will create a romantic and enchanting setting for all who attend the Culture & Chips carnival”, Nigel Dugdale added.

Culture & Chips is a quirky food carnival, taking place over the June bank holiday weekend in Limerick City Centre in association with Limerick City of Culture 2014. Events in the Spiegeltent include the Jerry Fish Electric Sideshow, A Wine Goose Chase, Culinary Carnival Banquet, Spiegelkidz Rhythm, World Chip Championships, Cabaret des Frites, Spiegeltent Breakfast Club, Jack L live, Clown Noir, Salon du Chat, and the Brad Pitt Light Orchestra live.

Notes to Editor:-

Spiegeltents are hand-hewn pavilions used as travelling dance halls, bars and entertainment salons since they were created in the early 20th century. There are only a handful of these unique and legendary ‘tents of mirrors’ left in the world today. Built of wood, mirrors, canvas, leaded glass and detailed in velvet and brocade, each has its own personality and style.

The Spiegeltent Salon Perdu is owned by Dutchman Jan De Kruijf who travels the world erecting the structure, 12 to 15 times a year. Its locations have varied from a dinner show below New York’s Brooklyn Bridge to the massive music festival, Lowlands, the Dutch equivalent of Glastonbury.

Salon Perdu is a superb Art Nouveau style Spiegeltent with a footprint of 20m x 24m.

It has a circular wooden floor surrounded by cosy booths decorated with polished mirrors, leadlight stained glass windows and carved wood detail, and some period lighting. It has a small stage, integral bar, elaborate entranceway, rich burgundy velvet drapes, and exterior ‘ticket’ office.
